First Day of The Week By C.E. White 3-09-03 I Corinthians : 11 23-26 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.Matthew 28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.Mark 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb Mark 16:9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. Luke 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" I Corinthians 16: 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.Genesis 2:2 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested [1] from all his workActs 20:7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread I have read all of these scriptures because I wanted to demonstrate that it is self-evident that GOD intended for us to partake of the LORD’s supper every seven days on the first day of the week. GOD knows HIS children. HE knows our weaknesses and if nothing else GOD is a teacher. HE teaches us the importance of the 7 day cycle. 1. HE created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh.
HE does not want us to fall away or loose our way so HE gave us the LORD’s supper to celebrate every seven days. Some people believe that the single most important thing for us to do every Sunday is to hear the sermon. It is important but not the most important. Singing praises to GOD is important but it is not the most important. Fellowshipping when we come together is also very important … but … it is not the most important. Offering our prayers to GOD is important and I have to say it s very close to the single most important thing we do. BUT the truth is the single most important thing we do is celebrate the LORD’s death, burial and resurrection by partaking of the LORD’s supper …. EVERY SEVEN DAYS on the FIRST day of tbe week. That is why I have an overwhelming appreciation for this congregation. We make a "Big Deal" of the LORD’s supper every week and this is as it should be. Because it is a big deal. We must be perpetually reminded of our commitment to GOD … and the best way for us to do this is to remember HOW and WHY we are allowed to have a relationship with our HEAVENLY FATHER in the first place. Shall we pray – Our most gracious heavenly FATHER, We come before you this morning, your children, offering up our prayers in celebration of the LORD’s Supper. We are overwhelmingly grateful for this reminder you have given to us … for … without it we would surely forget. FATHER as we partake of this LORD’s Supper, we are filled with shame and sadness. We are ashamed that we are so weak that YOU had to take something that was perfect and sacrifice it to save us. JESUS was crucified because of HIS perfection … not because of his crimes or sins .. but because of and for us. FATHER, our shame is only surpassed by our gratitude and joy that we have from receiving this ultimate loving gift. We thank you for JESUS life, HIS death, HIS burial and HIS ultimate resurrection. FATHER, as we partake of this bread, help us to visualize JESUS birth and HIS life growing up. Let us see HIS ministry and all of the miracles he performed along with the LOVE he demonstrated. Then let us see the betrayal, and his agonizing climb to the top of the hill with a cross strapped to him. And FATHER , let us see the nails being driven into HIS wrist and feet. Let us see the excruciating pain HE suffered and HE expressed on HIS face. Let us see HIS face and the increase in pain HE felt with every foot that the cross was raised in the air. And then the ultimate agonizing pain HE suffered when the cross was fully raised and HIS full weight was then on the nails. Then HE hung there for hours … suffering … abandoned … humiliated … all because HE was perfect …. All for us. Be with us now as we partake of this bread. Help us to remember and to feel all of this. In Jesus Christ Name we pray. AMEN. Father as we continue this LORD’s Supper by partaking of this fruit of the vine, let our minds return to the cross. Let us see near the end, where HE was stabbed in the side. Let us see the blood and water that poured out of HIS side. Let us remember then the permanent relationship that Blood and water would have for us from then on. The Blood gushed from JESUS side and washed us pure as the driven snow…. And we come in contact with that blood through the water we are buried in during our baptism. Again Father we Thank you for you and Jesus’ sacrifice. May we always remember. May We always be grateful. May we some day stand before you and again express our LOVE and Gratitude for you and Jesus. Be with us now as we partake of this fruit of the vine. May our hearts be pure. May ours souls be rejuvenated. May our minds be focused as YOU would have them to be. In Jesus Christ Name we pray. AMEN.
